Soaking off the heat at McDade’s Park pool and splash pad

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Another way to cool off for free is finally opened in Lackawanna County.

The pool and splash pad at McDade Park is finally open after some repairs.

“We’re just excited we can bring her up and it’s so close to home, she’s happy with it,” says Carol Niemiec from Taylor.

Opening the last week of June was not part of the plan.

“Originally we were planning to open a couple of weeks ago, but when we filled the pool up and the chemistry was good we noticed it was losing a couple of inches a day,” said Paul Bechtel the director of Lackawanna County Parks and Recreation.

A leak was causing all the problems

“It was in one of the seams in one of the joints, so we had to wait until we got the water lower we had the contractor come back and he was able to patch it last week,” explained Bechtel.

Now the pool is ready for use all summer long.

“You know what, late is better than never it’s close, it’s free, it’s clean, and the kids love it,” added Jennifer Tufano from Scranton.

“What are you going to do when you first get in there?” asked 28/22 News.

“Jump in,” answered Kelsey from Factoryville.

Being one of the few pools in the area the county is taking precautions to make sure McDade remains a safe space for families to enjoy

“Sheriffs are going to be there on the weekends to just keep crowds under control so we are prepared,” stated Bechtel.

Since the contractor was already contracted with the county, there was no extra cost for the repairs. The pool is open daily from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. with lifeguards on staff the entire time.
