Brandon Montour is the first Stanley Cup winner to depart from the Florida Panthers. And it is a payday from the Seattle Kraken of all places. They are doubling his previous salary with a seven-year, $50 million contract. Elliotte Friedman confirmed the news a short while ago:

He had a bonafide career year in 2022-2023 but struggled this past season with injury and inconsistency. However, he has established himself as a top-pairing type of guy who can really move the puck. At age 30 this is probably the last deal he makes in the NHL. Seattle is hoping he can consistently be the guy that put up 57 assists and 73 points in 80 games two seasons ago. After their exciting playoff appearance in 2023, it was a down year where they went 34-35-3. Adding a top-end guy like Montour is definitely a gamble when they are not a solidified playoff team yet. However, a pairing of him and Vince Dunn is very intriguing. They have been building a prospect pool with the hopes some guys can take the next step next season. A new voice behind the bench is on the way in the form of Dan Bylsma.

Rebuild The Blue Line?

The Panthers will find a replacement for Montour, no question. Their state tax advantage will strike again and hockey fans will be upset. They already brought back Sam Reinhart at a very nice discount for likely the rest of his career. The Cats just have a nice little thing going on. A coach in Paul Maurice who empowers his players to dominate and is a player’s coach to the highest degree. Bill Zito running the show as one of the best executives in the game. And a core of superstars who have as good a chance as anyone to repeat as champions.

The Seattle Kraken made a big swing in free agency. Brandon Montour figures to be at the very top of their blue line for next season.
