Chandler Stephenson Inks Seven-Year Deal
Chandler Stephenson served his time well as a Vegas Golden Knight. However, there was no way they were gonna pay his new contract. The winners of those sweepstakes are the Vegas Kraken. They are adding the former Stanley Cup champion on a seven-year deal worth $43.75 million. He’s a good middle-six forward but was anyone ready for him to make that much? Elliotte Friedman confirmed the news and JFresh showed why it might be an overpay:
Remember, these numbers come from playing on one of the best teams in the league. I will give him credit in saying that the eye test helps him more than this, but not much else. If the young forwards start to develop and turn into stars, he can turn into a useful winger or even center. However, there is a lot of money coming out of Seattle’s pockets. Both this move and the signing of Brandon Montour could age very poorly in the future. Both of them come from some of the best teams in the league and had the luxury of great players surrounding them.
Too Risky?
As a new team, of course, the Kraken do not want to have the loser label on them for long. However, you might get hit with the stupid label here. Of course, Vegas had the luxury of no state income tax and one of the smartest front offices in the league. They built a powerful and sustainable powerhouse virtually overnight. That doesn’t happen everywhere. In fact, pricey deals like these often result in more struggles and the lack of ability to raise your ceiling. If these guys do not play to the value they signed to, it could get very ugly.
Seattle is one of the big spenders today. However, they may not end up being one of the big winners. They committed a lot of money into two borderline gambles in order to inject talent.
