Seattle Seahawks Urged To Trade 1,000-Yard Wide Receiver

The Seattle Seahawks made a major change this offseason, moving on from head coach Pete Carroll. He was replaced by Mike Macdonald, who was previously the defensive coordinator of the Baltimore Ravens.

Given that change, it is fair to call the Seattle Seahawks a team in transition. Some would say a rebuild is needed, as the team is in a tough spot.

Seattle isn’t bad enough to factor into the mix for a top pick, going 9-8 the last two seasons. But, they aren’t good enough to seriously contend for a Super Bowl as arguably the third-best team in their own division.

As a result, the Seattle Seahawks are a team to keep an eye on during the regular season. If things begin to go south, or ownership commits to a rebuild, there are a few solid trade pieces on the roster.

One of those pieces is wide receiver Tyler Lockett. Over at Bleacher Report , Alex Ballentine has pitched the idea of the stellar wide receiver being traded.

“If they decide to go that route they would have a few trade assets who could net a good return. Tyler Lockett is the most notable. He signed a new contract this offseason, but he still only has two years left on his deal. A trade this season would clear $14.9 million in cap space,” Ballentine wrote.

Turning 32 years old in September, Lockett still has plenty of juice left to offer a team. He may not be a go-to No. 1 receiver at this stage of his career, but he can certainly help elevate a passing offense.

Lockett is as consistent as it gets at wide receiver, recording 73+ receptions and 894+ yards in six consecutive seasons. He has caught at least five touchdowns in all six of those seasons as well, breaking the 1,000-yard mark four times.

Given how much of an aerial league the NFL has turned into, there are plenty of teams that would be interested in Lockett. For the Seattle Seahawks, the motivation to trade him would be more than monetary.

Saving $14.9 million is a huge chunk of change, but they also have a wide receiver ready for a bigger role in Jaxon Smith-Njigba. A first-round pick out of Ohio State in 2023, Smith-Njigba has the skill set to be the No. 2 option in the passing game behind D.K. Metcalf.
