The Seattle Kraken needed to free up cap space and a roster spot so they traded veteran defenseman Brian Dumoulin to the Anaheim Ducks despite his request to be traded to an East Coast team.

Travis Lazarczyk of the Portland Press Herald , the 32-year-old requested a trade to the East Coast a month ago but it was turned down until the signing of Brandon Montour.

The Kraken traded Dumoulin for a 2026 fourth-round pick but the move gave them more cap space to sign Matty Beniers and opened a roster spot for Ryker Evans.

"I’m excited about the opportunity. They’re a young and up-and-coming team," Dumoulin said. "I’m not going in there to be another coach. I want to get to know the group."

The Biddeford, Maine native has racked up 626 career games in the NHL scoring 25 goals and 155 points. He spent the first 10 years of his career with the Pittsburgh Penguins winning two Stanley Cups as Kris Letang's defence partner.

Playing with the Kraken last year, Dumoulin provided them with leadership on the backend. He played in 80 games last year and registered 17:00 of TOI.

Dumoulin is once again proving he is the ultimate teammate by promising to continue to work hard even though the situation he finds himself in isn't what he is looking for. The Ducks will be adding a 6'4, left-handed d-man who will block shots and do whatever it takes to win hockey games.
