Ettinger defends UM record in Gaza crisis
ST. PAUL, Minn. — The University of Minnesota’s interim president, Jeff Ettinger, defended how he handled issues on campus involving the Israel-Hamas war. About negotiations to take down a campout that threatened to close down the campus, Ettinger acknowledged to a Senate committee that the crisis required a difficult balancing between campus safety and free speech rights. “We may not have always gotten it right,” Ettinger said. “But I can assure you, we tackled each challenge in a manner befitting of the seriousness of those issues.” The campout ended when Ettinger agreed to arrange meetings in the future between protesters and a separate UM unit that controls university investments in Israel. Ettinger also told the Senate Judiciary and Public Safety Committee that he resisted calls to take sides. The whole experience, Ettinger said, reinforced his commitment to university as “an arena, and not a participant.”
Orono board OKs revised budget, looks to next year
Now that school is no longer in session and the sun has set on Orono’s High School– and kindergarten– graduations, the Orono school board finalized its 2023-24 revised budget and approved the 2024-25 preliminary budget.
