Over the past four months, Taylor Swift has faced significant backlash from fans and social media users for her continuous release of multiple versions of her eleventh studio album , The Tortured Poets Department. Originally launched on April 19, 2024, the album remains a powerhouse, dominating four crucial Billboard charts.

It holds the top spot on three of these charts and came close to leading a fourth. Despite the passage of time, the Grammy winner’s latest work maintains its stronghold on almost every ranking it graces. This week, the album retains its No. 1 position on the Billboard 200, marking its fourteenth nonconsecutive week at the pinnacle of the all-genre album consumption list.

Billboard has already confirmed it will achieve a fifteenth week at the top. Since its release and as of this month, the record has seen nearly 40 distinct variants.

Critics on TikTok and X (formerly Twitter) have labeled Swift, 34, as “greedy” and “vile,” accusing her of deliberately issuing new versions to “block” other artists , such as Charli XCX, Sabrina Carpenter, Billie Eilish , and Chappell Roan , from claiming the number one spot.

Is Taylor Swift Trying To ‘Block’ Other Female Artists From Reaching The Billboard No. 1 Spot? Here’s Why Critics Think So

Just this week, The Tab reported that Swift has once again dropped some exclusive editions of her Tortured Poets album, perfectly timed for her chart showdown with Chappell Roan (real name Kayleigh Amstutz), 26, who is vying for her first number one album. Roan’s The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess has been gaining momentum recently, even securing the top spot on the UK album chart last week.

Meanwhile, the “Anti-Hero” hitmaker faces criticism for her strategy of frequently releasing limited edition versions of her album to retain her leading position. Many now believe that the latest two editions of The Tortured Poets Department from Swift are aimed at preventing Roan from overtaking her.

Additionally, some believe that the “Down Bad” songwriter is also striving to surpass long-time rival Kanye West , who has released multiple versions of Vultures 2 . In a related move, Swift has altered the wording of her song “Thank You Aimee” —originally styled as “thanK you aIMee,” which was perceived as a jab at Kim Kardashian. The new digital download now reads “thank You aimEe,” (capitalizing YE).

On X, many fans and critics continue to react to the news that Swift has released even more variants of her most recent album. “Thanks to taylor swift dropping more versions of “the tortureD poEtS dePartment”, chappEll Roan will most likely not go #1 in the united stATEs this week,” one wrote (capitalizing DESPERATE to slam Swift).

Another added: “Taylor Swift dropping her 148th variant of an album no one knows any songs off to block Chappell Roan KNOWING that this is Chappell’s only week to go number one because Post Malone just released is just anti feminist loser behaviour. I’m sorry, she’s lost a fan in me.”

Previously, Swift was also accused of “blocking” Charli XCX and her hit June record Brat and Billie Eilish with her May album Hit Me Hard and Soft. Right as these albums were anticipated to reach the No. 1 position, Swift released new editions of Tortured Poets , preempting either album from claiming the top spot, much to fans’ notice online.

Swift has remained silent amid the ongoing backlash. Meanwhile , her album Tortured Poets has been a global sensation , shattering numerous records. It became the first album ever to surpass 1 billion Spotify streams within a week and sold an astonishing 2.6 million units in its first week in the United States . Swift achieved an unprecedented feat by dominating the entire top 14 of the Billboard Hot 100 and the top 10 of Australia’s ARIA Singles Chart.

The album also enjoyed a 14-week reign at the pinnacle of the Billboard 200, marking Swift’s longest stay at number one. The lead single, “Fortnight,” featuring Post Malone , secured Swift her 12th number-one hit on the Hot 100. With estimated global sales of 200 million records, Swift stands among the world’s best-selling music artists.
