A residential building in Shelton has been left uninhabitable after a truck crashed into it Friday night, firefighters said .

The Shelton Fire Department responded to reports of a vehicle colliding with a building at 1001 Bridgeport Ave. around 6:10 p.m. on Friday.

Upon arrival, firefighters saw the occupant pinned inside the vehicle. A staircase leading to an upstairs apartment was also heavily damaged. Members of several firefighter units including Rescue 30, Squad 1 and Engine 24 helped to stabilize the stairs. Once the stairs were secure, heavy equipment was used to pull the vehicle from under the stairs and free the occupant. Firefighters said it took about 45 minutes to free the occupant from the vehicle.

The occupant was transported to a local trauma facility, officials said. The city building inspector deemed the upper apartment not habitable due to the condition of the stairs.
