The Bridge That Was: University Removes 1970s Footbridge
The Ridley Footbridge over Emmet Street is gone. The bridge, built in the early 1970s as part of the construction of what is now the University of Virginia’s School of Education and Human Development, was dismantled over the weekend. Facilities Management closed Emmet Street Thursday night to allow contractor S.B. Cox of Richmond to begin the demolition of the bridge, starting with breaking up the concrete pad on the bridge’s surface with jackhammers mounted on the articulated arms of excavators.

Broken AC postpones Stribling Avenue sidewalk meeting

The Stribling Avenue sidewalk meeting that was initially scheduled for July 16th has been postponed to Tuesday, July 30th, due to an unexpected issue with the venue’s air conditioning. The rescheduled meeting will take place at Fry’s Spring Beach Club.

Six months after local Head Start provider closed, its executive director has resigned
Sarah Hanks, executive director the Monticello Area Community Action Agency, has resigned from her position, according to the organization’s website. Hanks’ resignation comes about six months after MACAA decided to surrender its Early Head Start and Head grants to the national Office of Head Start. The resignation occurred at MACAA’s June board meeting, which the Board did not allow members of the public to attend.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – The Charlottesville Tom Sox and Virginia Cavaliers were represented well Monday on Day Two of the Major League Baseball draft. Three former Tom Sox players were selected on the second day of the 2024 MLB First-Year Player Draft, as announced by their respective clubs Monday. Players selected include 2023 ‘Sox pitcher Davian Garcia (Florida Gulf Coast), 2022 pitcher Fisher Jameson (Florida), and 2022 first baseman/outfielder Carter Cunningham (East Carolina). The three former ‘Sox join 2022 pitcher Trey Yesavage, who was selected with the 20th overall pick in Sunday’s first round.

The Virginia Cavaliers now have triple-digit MLB Draft selections under head coach Brian O’Connor. Griff O’Ferrall was selection #99 after he was drafted to the Baltimore Orioles at pick #32, and Ethan Anderson was selection #100 for Coack Oak since he came to Charlottesville in 2004 after he was drafted with the #62 pick, also by the Baltimore Orioles.

On Saturday, Bobby Olsen starred on the mound, with four shutout innings, striking out 5 Harrisonburg Turks on the way to a quality start. Ryan Grzesiak, Frank Mendendez, and Garrett Mason got the Sox over the line, surrendering only three runs to the Turks throughout the game.
