U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services will welcome 100 new U.S. citizens, including five members of the military, during a special Independence Day naturalization ceremony at Mount Vernon on July 4. The ceremony was part of USCIS’ Independence Day celebration of our nation’s 248th birthday and the anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. The 100 citizenship candidates originate from the following 54 countries: Afghanistan, Algeria, Argentina, Bangladesh, Barbados, Belgium, Bolivia, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, China, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Egypt, El Salvador, Estonia, Ethiopia, Germany, Ghana, Guinea, Honduras, India, Iran, Ireland, Italy, Jamaica, Jordan, Kenya, Kosovo, Mexico, Mongolia, Morocco, Nepal, Netherlands, Nicaragua, Pakistan, Panama, Peru, Portugal, Russia, Serbia, Sierra Leon, Somalia, South Korea, Spain, Sudan, Syria, Thailand, United Kingdom, Venezuela, Vietnam and Yemen.
Roanoke River added to recreation/fish advisories
ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ/VDH Release) - The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) is extending its recreational water advisory and its fish consumption advisory to include the Meherrin and Roanoke rivers. For the safety of people and pets, VDH is advising that recreational water activities, such as swimming, wading, tubing, canoeing, kayaking, and boating, should be avoided. VDH also recommends not consuming any fish taken from these waterways effective Saturday, July 6 until further notice.

The case of the Broadway man facing theft-related charges delayed
ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, Va. (ROCKTOWN NOW) – A court appearance for the Broadway man who is facing a slew of theft-related charges has been delayed for two weeks. Vladimir Petrovich Mazur was scheduled to appear for a preliminary hearing on Thursday, but according to online records showed that the preliminary hearing for Mazur was continued for a sixth time, until July 24th in Rockingham County General District Court.
