Authorities are investigating a deadly shooting in Somerville on Monday night.

Officers responding to a report of a shooting on Dartmouth Street just before 10:30 p.m. found a victim, identified as 49-year-old Paul Nolan from Somerville, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, according to Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan and Somerville Chief of Police Charles Femino.

“Something just felt wrong when I heard it,” said Jay Ricco, who heard the gunshots Monday night on Dartmouth Street in Somerville. “They sounded like somebody hammering on a metal panel, it didn’t sound like pops, it sounded like crashes, I thought somebody dropped something originally, but it had that characteristic one two three four, little pause, one two three and then another two.”

Another neighbor captured surveillance video of the response following this shooting.

“I did see that there were some people standing outside of here about 30 minutes prior and someone was on the phone they were in a blue shirt, but that was about it, it all happened very quickly,” said Ricco.

Nolan was transported to Massachusetts General Hospital, where he died from his injuries.

“I could just say he was a good guy and he treated everybody good,” said Teresa Florio, a friend of Nolan’s.

Florio says Nolan had just been released from prison a couple weeks ago.

“I just heard that I don’t know some guys jumped out, ran after him and shot him but I don’t know what went down beforehand why, I don’t know if somebody found out he was out of jail and had something against him,” said Florio.

Investigators were on the scene all day Tuesday piecing together what led up to this deadly shooting while neighbors hope the killer is caught soon.

“There have been some things that have happened here in the past, so I mean I feel like it might be related, so I’m not particularly worried, but at the same time the fact that it happens to be so close is kind of a little bit stressful,” said Ricco.

At this point the Middlesex County DA’s office hasn’t said whether any suspects have been arrested for this murder.

Anyone with any information is urged to contact Somerville Police at 617-625-1600 ext. 7250.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.
