Last year's Notre Dame football season looked like many of the past decade in which the Fighting Irish were good but not great. They were ranked between No. 9 and No. 22 all year in the AP Poll, but there is optimism that the 2024 Notre Dame football season will be different. Coach Marcus Freeman secured a top-10 recruiting class, landed a proven quarterback in transfer Riley Leonard from Duke , and had Tyler Buchner rejoin the football team as a wide receiver.
Buchner initially was initially slotted as a quarterback on the Notre Dame football depth chart from 2021-22 before transferring to Alabama for a season. He then transferred back to the Irish, but as a lacrosse midfielder instead of a football player. He rejoined the Fighting Irish football team this season, switching positions to wideout. Replacing running back Audric Estime will be one of the highest priorities for new offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock, who returns to South Bend after seven years at other schools. Estime had 1,341 rushing yards in 2023 and was third in the nation with 18 rushing touchdowns en route to being taken in the fifth round of the 2024 NFL Draft. The battle to succeed him is expected to be in between sophomore Jeremiyah Love and redshirt sophomore Jadarian Price
Incoming freshman Aneyas Williams could also push for touches early on, and his versatility could be used as a runner, receiver and return specialist. The four-star was the No. 23 running back in the Class of 2024, per 247Sports, and he has a knack for the endzone. He hit pay dirt 151 times in his prep career at Hannibal High (MO), which is the second-most touchdowns in Missouri High School history. Get more updates on the Notre Dame RB at Irish Illustrated .
Another one of the Notre Dame football headlines surrounds the style of offense that Denbrock will implement. Denbrock has spent 17 years as an assistant under former Irish coach Brian Kelly, including previously at Notre Dame (2010-16) and the last two years at LSU . He led the Tigers to the top scoring offense in the country last season as the offensive coordinator, with quarterback Jayden Daniels winning the Heisman Trophy.
Denbrock gets another dual-threat quarterback in Leonard, who had 699 yards and 13 TDs on the ground in his last full season in 2022. However, LSU also had two receivers who were first-round draft picks, so Denbrock will have to adjust his offense to a squad that doesn't have as much top-end talent out wide.
