SOUTH SALT LAKE, Utah ( ABC4 ) — New documents obtained by ABC4.com have revealed that the suspect in a stabbing at a TRAX station last month is a 12-year-old boy.

The stabbing occurred on the platform of a TRAX station in South Salt Lake on June 18, leaving three victims — a woman and two boys — with non-life-threatening injuries.

On June 18, officials with the Utah Transit Authority and the UTA Police Department said the suspect boarded a TRAX train after the incident but was taken into custody by officers who were waiting at the next station.

According to an affidavit for a search warrant filed and executed in July, the suspect knew the victims and had allegedly robbed one of the juvenile suspects prior to the stabbing.

The victims told officers they were robbed by the suspect at a Millcreek TRAX station a couple of weeks before the June 18 incident, but didn’t report it, the affidavit said. The officer who filed the affidavit reviewed the security footage and detailed some of the altercation.

“There appeared to be a verbal exchange between [the suspect] and the adult female, she then approaches [the suspect] and pours some of her water bottle on him, he then punches her in the mouth, she continues to advance towards [the suspect] as do the two male juveniles,” the affidavit said.

After the trio advanced toward the suspect, the affidavit said the suspect pulled out his knife and stabbed the victims. The woman was stabbed twice, and the two boys each received one puncture wound in different areas.

When the suspect was taken into custody, he spoke to officers and said the woman reportedly poured water on him after one of the boys told her the suspect had robbed them earlier. The suspect told police he used the knife for protection after the boys began to fight him.

“He stated that he didn’t really target anyone he was just trying to defend himself,” the affidavit said.

The suspect said he boarded a southbound train to leave after the victims “had taken his phone that dropped and his ski mask that he was wearing and wouldn’t give them back,” according to the affidavit.

When asked why he was wearing a ski mask, the suspect told police that it was a fashion trend, the affidavit said. He also said he had the knife for safety after “other confrontations,” according to the affidavit.

The search warrant was executed on July 8 and officials obtained the suspect’s phone and submitted it for processing.
