Keeping your home cool during extreme heat

SPOKANE, Wash. - With a week of brutal temperatures ahead, it's extremely important for our community to stay cool.

Experts said that it's important to take action before the peak temperatures hit to keep your home as cool as possible.

Amanda French, a Spokane HVAC business owner, said taking steps now is the best way to try to make sure you keep the cold air inside your home. For people with AC, HVAC experts recommended turning on your air conditioning units ahead of the heat.

"Don't think, 'I'm going to try to help it out and have it run at night.' Don't do that. It's much, much harder for your air conditioner to recover not only your house, but every single object in your house." said French.

French said it takes a lot of energy to get AC started up and begin cooling the home. It's also harder to cool your space once it's already warmed up.

If you're working with a window or wall unit AC, make sure the filter is clean and the airflow isn't obstructed as it will diminish its effort to cool down.

If you have neither here's what can you do:

"When we talk about trying to make sure that you're keeping a room nice and tight, you're not letting anything in. Even if all you've got is the kids blanket covering up that window is going to have an effect that's going to help, especially people who have single pane windows."

Most importantly, check in with your loved ones and look out for each other during the extreme heat.

"Keep in mind that if you know anybody, again who is older might have health issues, keep them in mind. If you can invite them over and you have AC, let them come over, encourage them to go visit a library, visiting our public libraries," said French.
