Colts electric tight end surprisingly struggling to climb depth chart

There is plenty of hope that tight end Jelani Woods can turn into an impact player for the Indianapolis Colts , but that development has hit a bit of a snag at training camp.

With the majority of training camp practices behind them, the Colts are now preparing for their preseason opener against the Denver Broncos on Sunday.

There has been strong competition at the tight end position for the Colts with a quintet of players vying for roles, including Woods.

However, Kevin Bowen of 1075 The Fan had a surprising note about Woods' spot in the pecking order.

"If you want to know where Jelani Woods is on the depth chart, he was taking some developmental reps on Wednesday with Kedon Slovis and Jason Bean at quarterback. Woods has a ways to go to move his way up the depth chart," Bowen wrote.

While Woods has seen reps with the first-team offense at points during camp — as have the other four tight ends — this is a pretty big surprise.

There have been multiple reports of Woods struggling with concentration drops throughout camp so maybe that has something to do with it.

Shane Steichen is smart enough to know how to maximize Woods' historic athleticism , but this does come as a bit of shock considering how many analysts (including yours truly) believe the third-year tight end could break out.

This will be something to watch during the preseason, but it's certainly a surprise if Woods is buried on the depth chart.
