Bears guard in grave danger of being benched after most recent setback

The Chicago Bears might be witnessing a changing of the guard along the offensive line.

Training camp at Halas Hall has been all abuzz over Chicago’s new-look offense, but who will be the linemen protecting Caleb Williams every Sunday? That’s a question head coach Matt Eberflus is undoubtedly mulling over, especially as one of the Bears’ oft-injured guards has suffered another setback.

Patrick Finley of the Chicago Sun-Times reported on Thursday that guard Nate Davis is dealing with an injury that has taken him off the field.

“Bears guard Nate Davis had a setback with a muscle strain when he ramped up Sunday,” Finley said. “Matt Eberflus considers him "week to week.”

Davis’s new setback won’t do anything good for his job security, which was already being questioned , according to reports.

Eberflus is presiding over an ultra-competitive Bears camp wherein toughness and availability matter most, meaning anyone unable to show up every day will run the risk of being usurped by a more readily available player.

Despite Davis signing a three-year, $30 million deal with Chicago in March 2023, his health and subsequent availability will be what grant him favor in the eyes of Eberflus, who as a player was as gritty as they come.

Davis proved his worth as a sturdy lineman in 2020 when he started all 16 games for the Tennessee Titans and helped pave the way for Tennessee’s Derrick Henry to run for 2,000+ yards.

Since then, Davis has not completed a full season, and he appeared in just 11 games for Chicago in 2023.
