Drew Brees has a surprising take about Saints, Taysom Hill at QB

Drew Brees wants to see the New Orleans Saints use Taysom Hill more at quarterback.

Brees recently appeared on WWL Radio (h/t Jeff Nowak of Audacy Sports) and made the argument that efficiency points to Hill deserving more looks under center in Derek Carr’s offense.

“I don’t know why we haven’t lived in a world where Taysom Hill is getting 10 to 12 snaps a game at quarterback,” Brees said. “Look, if you want to go and you want to chart the plays where he’s in and he’s playing quarterback, and you just chart the result of the plays and then you match that up with the rest of the plays, I would argue that some of our most successful plays, consistently, are when Taysom Hill is at quarterback.”

The eye test helps this idea pass before even looking at the charts. Hill’s threat as a runner makes him dynamic, considering he averages better than five yards per carry for his career with 27 touchdowns. As a passer, he’s completed 64.1 percent of his 298 attempts, too.

What’s interesting is looking beyond efficiency numbers, though. Hill can play all types of positions, whether it’s tight end, wideout or even fullback. And there’s a conversation to be had about if and how his replacing a starting passer like Carr disrupts the timing of the offense.

Either way, the Saints have already made it clear that Hill will have an even bigger role in 2024 . Whether that means more quarterback snaps remains to be seen, but it’s hard to imagine his average number of snaps there drops or that the efficiency numbers dip, too.
