The Minnesota Twins widely are considered one of the top contenders in the American League and could be even better in the near future.

Minnesota currently is in second place in the American League Central with an impressive 65-52 record. The Twins could make some noise this fall and took a step to add firepower on Monday by reportedly calling up No. 6 prospect Zebby Matthews, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan.

“The Minnesota Twins are calling up right-hander Zebby Matthews, one of the fastest-rising prospects in baseball this year, sources tell ESPN,” Passan said. “Matthews, an eighth-round pick out of Western Carolina in 2022, has 114 strikeouts and seven walks in 97 IP. Elite command, good stuff.”

Matthews is just 24 years old and now will have an opportunity to add a boost to the Twins’ starting rotation. So far this season he has appeared in 18 games and has a 2.60 ERA overall. He is one of the most exciting prospects in the Twins’ farm system and was selected in the eighth round of the 2022 Major League Baseball June Amateur Draft.

The fact that he has shown enough in the minors to get the call-up should be a welcomed sight for Twins fans. Minnesota already clearly is in a good spot as shown through its impressive record but now could get even better with Matthews on the way to the big leagues.
