Jahmyr Gibbs injury: NFL insider guesses Lions RB's return timeline

The Detroit Lions saw running back Jahmyr Gibbs suffer a hamstring injury at practice on Monday, which leaves his status in question moving forward.

It was ESPN's Adam Schefter who broke the news that Gibbs was dealing with the hamstring issue, although the severity of the injury remains unknown as of this writing.

Schefter went on the "The Pat McAfee Show" on Tuesday and provided some insight into how long Gibbs might be out, although he admitted it was a guess.

"Gibbs essentially left practice yesterday with what the team called a leg injury," he said. "Made some calls and found that it's a hamstring. Now, I don't know the extent of the hamstring... I would guess we will not see Jahmyr Gibbs the rest of the summer and we will prepare to see him opening night against the Los Angeles Rams. That would be my guess. A guess on a hamstring injury.

"But when you're talking about a player this explosive, this dynamic, this talented, obviously it's a huge concern anytime there's any sort of injury. But again, hamstring would tell me that he's going to have a real chance to be back on opening night and the team will be smart about it until then."

That is certainly a logical guess from Schefter. There is absolutely no reason to rush Gibbs back and, assuming the injury isn't serious, there's plenty of time to get him right before the start of the season, with a little under four weeks left to go until Detroit plays the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday, Sept. 8.

Gibbs dealt with a hamstring injury in 2023 that forced him to miss two games, so he's no stranger to them. Coming off a sensational rookie campaign, Gibbs will play a huge role in the Lions' offense and is expected to get more work as a receiver.
