Two of the best pitchers in baseball go head-to-head when the Pirates and Mariners meet on Friday night.
Paul Skenes has been nothing short of sensational since debuting in May, less than a year after being picked No. 1 overall in the 2023 MLB Draft out of LSU. Through 15 starts, Skenes has a 2.25 ERA and 115 strikeouts, devastating hitters with a blazing fastball and uncanny 'splinker.'
Logan Gilbert has been equally dominant for Seattle. The fourth-year right-hander earned his first All-Star appearance earlier in the year, and now has a 2.91 ERA through 24 starts. In his last start, he hurled seven innings of shutout ball against the Mets.
Each game is of heightened importance for the Mariners, who just got swept in Detroit and sit three games behind the first-place Astros in the American League West. Perhaps Seattle can get a boost from star outfielder Julio Rodriguez, who recently returned after missing several weeks with an ankle injury.
This series marks the Mariners' first trip to PNC Park since 2019.
