Jazz Chisholm injury update: Yankees star's potential return timeline revealed

New York Yankees star infielder Jazz Chisholm is currently on the injured list after suffering a UCL injury earlier this week.

After further tests and multiple opinions were sought, it seems the 26-year-old lefty will avoid surgery for now in hopes of a return in September.

According to Greg Joyce and Jon Heyman of The New York Post , the current recommendation for Chisholm is to rest and rehab rather than go under the knife.

"After the Yankees sought multiple opinions from doctors on their new third baseman’s UCL injury, rest and rehab has been recommended for Chisholm instead of surgery, The Post’s Jon Heyman confirmed on Friday," Joyce wrote. "The club is hopeful Chisholm can play again this season, likely in September."

While the Yankees aren't out of the woods yet, this seems to be a more hopeful outcome in terms of Chisholm's availability for a potential playoff run.

Diagnosed with what the Yankees called a left elbow sprain, Chisholm sustained the injury diving into home plate during Monday night's 12-2 loss against the Chicago White Sox.

The injury is believed to have happened after White Sox catcher Korey Lee applied the tag to Chisholm's extended elbow on the play at the plate.

Despite the small sample size of 14 games, Chisholm proved to be an electric addition to the Yankees starting lineup. He was bringing a much-needed level of energy, speed and power that was missing for the last two months.

In the 14 games since he was acquired at the trade deadline , Chisholm was slashing .316/.361/.702 with a 189 OPS+, seven home runs, 11 RBI and five stolen bases in 61 plate appearances.

With Chisholm out for at least the next few weeks, the Yankees will rely on a combination of Oswaldo Cabrera, DJ LeMahieu and Oswald Peraza at third base.
