A shoulder injury to presumed starter Jacoby Brissett has added another element to the Patriots' ongoing QB battle .

Brissett was injured after taking a big hit during the team's preseason finale against Washington. He was visibly shaken up after the hit but remained on the field to complete his lone drive of the game, which ended with a punt.

Brissett is set to begin his second stint with New England and remains on track to be the franchise's Week 1 starter. He started all three of the team's preseason games and, during training camp, took more first-team reps than rookie Drake Maye, who was selected third overall in the 2024 draft.

Here is the latest on Brissett's injury and what it means for the Patriots moving forward.

    Jacoby Brissett injury update

In the first quarter of New England's Week 3 preseason matchup with Washington, Brissett was sacked by DE KJ Henry. The hit caused Brissett to sustain a right shoulder injury, a troubling ailment to the throwing arm of a quarterback.

After the game, Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo did not sound too concerned about the injury when he spoke with reporters postgame .

Will Jacoby Brissett be ready for Week 1?

Mayo hinted that Brissett could have continued to play if it were a regular-season game and said "We'll see tomorrow. You always feel more sore the next day, but he said that he was good."

In addition to his positive update on Brissett, Mayo referred to Maye as New England's "second-best quarterback," which suggests Brissett remains on track to start when the Patriots visit the Bengals to open the 2024 season.

    Patriots QB depth chart

As it stands, Brissett is the Patriots starting QB with Maye at second string.

New England's investment in Maye as the franchise QB of the future likely means the team will take a calculated approach to elevating his status on the depth chart. The Patriots are not projected to be a postseason team in 2024 and will be focused on Maye's long-term development and health in Year 1.
