Cardinals legend makes bold prediction about recently promoted slugger

The St. Louis Cardinals made a few roster moves on Monday prior to their series opener against the Cincinnati Reds.

The team promoted outfielder and slugger Jordan Walker from Triple-A Memphis. In a corresponding move, veteran infielder Matt Carpenter was placed on the 10-day injured list with a lower back strain, retroactive to August 9.

Walker's promotion brings a little excitement to St. Louis, and a team legend made a bold claim upon learning of the news.

"Jordan Walker is about to crush it down the stretch," Adam Wainwright tweeted.

Wainwright retired after the 2023 season and is now serving as an analyst on FOX Sports and MLB Network, as well as kicking off a music career. But his final season coincided with Walker's first year in Major League Baseball.

Last season, Walker hit .276 with 16 home runs, 51 RBI, seven stolen bases, and a .787 OPS. He went on a tear upon being called up in June of last year, and Wainwright bore witness to it.

Walker also has been hitting well in Triple-A after he was demoted on April 24. In his previous 17 games, the slugger had a slash line of .324/.380/.648 with a 1.028 OPS and a 156 wRC+. The Cardinals needed some help from the right side of the plate due to their struggles against left-handed pitching.

Wainwright certainly liked what he saw last year and is clearly very confident in his former teammate as the season winds down. The 42-year-old is certainly looking forward to seeing what Walker might be able to do for the Cardinals in the final two months of the regular season.

We'll see if his bold prediction comes true.
