UPDATE 7/15/2024 — The Springfield Police Department (SPD) has released the names of the two men involved in a shooting on Campbell Avenue.

According to a press release from SPD, 28-year-old Jesus Lopez Pacheco was found in the Party City parking lot at around 1:09 a.m. on July 14 with multiple gunshot wounds. He died at the scene.

A second man, 27-year-old Josue Fernando Alvarado Valenzuela, was also found with non-life-threatening injuries.

Online court documents show Valenzuela has been charged with second-degree murder and armed criminal action in the case.

A probable cause statement from SPD says the incident started at a nearby bar. Video obtained from the bar showed both men leaving when Pacheco hit Valenzuela in the back of the head and appeared to be swinging at him as they moved out of the camera’s view. Footage from a nearby traffic camera showed that Pacheco walked away from Valenzuela, who followed a short time later.

Cameras did not capture the shooting, but documents state a witness told police that he say Valenzuela “holding onto a car and kicking, stomping and hitting [Pacheco].”

The witness also said he saw Pacheco get up and run around a car, while Valenzuela jumped onto the car and began shooting at Pacheco.

Pacheco fell behind Valenzuela’s truck, according to the witness, and Valenzuela got into his truck and tossed the gun away. Another witness picked up the gun while a third opened the driver side door. Both started fighting with Valenzuela until authorities arrived.

The probable cause statement says Valenzuela claimed he and Pacheco traded punches in the parking lot, but denied having a gun, denied standing on top of a car and denied knowing where the gunshots came from.

Valenzuela is currently being held in the Greene County Jail without bond.

This is Springfield’s sixth homicide investigation for 2024.
