Friday, July 26: 90s will have to wait until a storm clears the area

We did it again, we didn’t hit 90°. It’s been 12 days since we hit 90°, quite a feat in late July. A pocket of unsettled weather moving north across the region this weekend will keep that streak going.

Saturday will be rather cloudy and there will be pockets of slow-moving showers and thunderstorms, especially in the afternoon. No severe weather is expected, but lightning and gusty winds will come with a few of the showers. Locally heavy rain is also expected. And, while it won’t be a washout Saturday, some of the showers will be slow-moving and it may take a few hours for the rain to come to an end. Clouds and wet weather will also make for an unusually mild July day with highs in the upper 70s and low 80s.

Pockets of rain and thunder will continue into Saturday night with much of it fading away by late evening.

We’ll begin Sunday with widespread cloud cover and patchy fog. Clouds will thin some by afternoon with scattered showers and thunderstorms flaring up again, mainly east of Hwy. 65. Sunday will be an opportunity to salvage some of our weekend for hobbies like floating and boating. It definitely will be the pick day between the two for sunshine and warmer temperatures.

We can look forward to another summer surge next week, starting on Monday. In fact, Monday will likely be the first day with widespread 90° highs in two weeks. Monday will mark the beginning of a hot week of weather with highs in the 90s each day. The hot highs may be hampered by waves of clouds and storms spilling around the summer ridge. Western wildfire smoke could also mute highs and make for hazy conditions.

The heat may retreat some by the end of next week as a broader trough develops across the Eastern U.S. This will open the door for a cold front to move across the region Friday. The front will also bring an increase in rain chances while trimming back some of the heat for the following weekend.
