SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Sunday’s deadly shooting outside of the Wicked Superstore on Kearney Street is the second shooting at that business since December.

Neighbors tell OzarksFirst they’re fed up with the crime that the 24/7 smoke shop seems to attract.

The shooting happened at the Wicked Superstore on Kearney just before 3:30 Sunday morning.

OzarksFirst spoke to neighborhood officials who say the families who live in this area don’t need these kinds of problems.

Isaiah Church is charged with second-degree murder and armed criminal action after court documents say he shot and killed a man outside Wicked Superstore.

“The incident is still under investigation,” said Cris Swaters with the Springfield Police Department.

Miriam Sullinger lives nearby. She says she generally stays away from that building.

“I never have had any fear of anything happening,” Sullinger said.

Police say they have been called out to the store multiple times in recent months.

“Patrol officers know the areas where there is a high concentration of criminal activity,” Swaters said. “And in the course of their shifts in their beat, they do patrol those areas.”

Court documents say security footage shows Church and the victim interact in the parking lot before one shot was fired.

A witness drove the victim, D’Vaunte Grant, to the hospital where he died later that day.

“I haven’t had any serious problems here,” Sullinger said. “And the people are all really nice, generally speaking. You always have that, you know, element. But everybody, you just have to take precautions and hope for the best.”

In December, another shooting happened outside Wicked Superstore.

Two men were arguing inside the store. It was after they stepped outside when they shot at each other and one person was hit.

“Shootings happen all the time,” Sullinger said. “I mean, not every day or anything, but, you know, from time to time so that doesn’t bother me that much because I just try to do what I can to stay safe.”

A store employee tells OzarksFirst they are working on improving security and are looking to hire qualified security professionals.
