Foles is a legend, an icon in Philadelphia. He delivered the Eagles organization and their fans the first Super Bowl championship in franchise history. He took down Tom Brady and the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LII, 41-33 .
The 35-year-old quarterback was named Super Bowl MVP for his dominant performance against the Patriots. He passed for 373 yards and three touchdowns, and, of course, suggested what might be the greatest play in Eagles history to former head coach Doug Pederson. Four words that Eagles fans will never forget, “ you want Philly Philly? ” The Eagles went on to execute the trick play famously known as the Philly Special with Foles catching the pass for a touchdown.
A Legendary Career For A Backup
Foles was drafted by the Eagles in the third round of the 2012 NFL Draft. He played in seven games with six starts in his rookie season and owned a 1-5 record. He started 10 games in 2013 in which he threw 27 touchdowns and two interceptions, including a seven-touchdown game against the then-Oakland Raiders tying an NFL record. Foles was named to his first and only Pro Bowl of his career that season.
The former Arizona Wildcat couldn’t replicate his historic 2013 season. He threw for just 13 touchdowns and threw 10 interceptions in eight starts in 2014. He then moved on to St. Louis and Kansas City for the next two seasons.
The Eagles brought back their former draft pick in the 2017 season to back up MVP-hopeful Carson Wentz. Wentz was having an incredible season before tearing his ACL in Week 14 against the Los Angeles Rams. Foles came in and finished that game which resulted in an Eagles win. Losing Wentz for the playoffs was devastating news for the Eagles. Foles was able to win the next two games before being rested in the final week of the regular season.
Foles helped lead the Eagles on an improbable run in the postseason. They beat the Falcons in the Divisional Round and then routed the Minnesota Vikings in the NFC Championship Game, 38-7. We all know what happened next in the Super Bowl.
Foles was never able to live up to that same level of play. He spent the next season with the Eagles before moving on to the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2019. He was there for one season and then spent the next two seasons with the Chicago Bears. Foles spent his final season with the Indianapolis Colts in 2022.
Foles Will Retire As An Icon
Although Foles was a career backup for most of his 11-year career, he will forever be remembered as one of the greatest athletes in Philadelphia sports history. Foles has a statue outside of Lincoln Financial Field commemorating the Philly Special with Pederson. Now, he will retire as an Eagle. Eagles fans everywhere salute you, St. Nick!
