Welcome to the weekly Port City Foodies newsletter brought to you by me, StarNews reporter Allison Ballard. It’s been a busy month of food news so far, and we are only about half-way through the month. We’ve seen the return of Beggars Can’t Be Choosers to manna restaurant and more openings and closings. This week there was also some eagerly awaited news of the return of two popular downtown spots. Click below to read more.

    Roudabush renaissance

It’s been an interesting few months for YoSake and Husk in downtown Wilmington. First, the businesses sold to new owners and then a fire temporarily closed the eateries. Now, we know more about the partnership behind the change – which includes a well-known coach -- and their efforts to bring the restaurants back and open a new concept , a piano bar, on the third floor of the historic building.

    Best bars

On the heels of the USA Today Bars of the Year project, which saw Ocean Grill and Tiki Bar being named as one of the best in the country, we thought we’d show some love to some of our other favorite spots for a great adult beverage. My friend and colleague John Staton and I listed a few of them here .

    Sips and snacks

Speaking of great drinks, a Wilmington based sommelier recently offered some ideas for making the most of some summer-worthy varietals. And, because it’s too hot to cook, she paired them with some easy snacks. Grab a bottle, pop some popcorn and slice some watermelon and you’ll be all set.

    In case you missed it

Of course, I mentioned that manna has brought back something great . If you’re looking for more food news for your weekend reading, here’s a look on the ongoing Vegan Chef Challenge (where local restaurants are creating plant-based fare for judging) and how the local owners of the Tropical Smoothie cafes are celebrating a decade in business.
