Replacement of this decades-old Brunswick bridge to include new technology
The replacement of the Calabash River Bridge is well underway, and officials with the N.C. Department of Transportation say it is on schedule. Replacing the decades-old Brunswick County bridge is expected to be a two-year feat. The bridge has been closed to traffic since the demolition of the old bridge began in September. Military Ocean Terminal Sunny Point welcomes new commander on 'hallowed ground'
That’s how Major General Gavin A. Lawrence, commanding general of Military Surface Deployment and Distribution Command, referred to Fort Johnston during the Assumption of Command Ceremony for Military Ocean Terminal Sunny Point (MOTSU). Fort Johnston once served as the home of the commander of the 596th Transportation Brigade at MOTSU.
Oak Island denies permit extension for house
Oak Island Town Council denied a request to extend a special use permit (SUP) this month for a property owner who said he wanted to build his retirement home at The Point. Council held a quasi-judicial hearing during its June 18 meeting to consider the extension for Kuntal Ghandi and his property at 6963 Kings Lynn Drive. Ghandi appeared before council for a quasi-judicial hearing earlier this year related to his Ocean Crest Motel property on East Beach Drive. He didn’t get the same results this time around, however, as council felt Ghandi failed to meet the requirements needed to grant an extension and denied the request in a 4-1 vote with Mark Martin casting the lone dissenting opinion.

Downtown Wilmington could have another hotel added to its skyline in the near future, with plans for development proposed near the Port City's riverfront. Large residential development to bring mix of housing types to southern Brunswick
A conditional rezoning will make way for a more than 1,500-home mixed-use community in Sunset Beach. With "Angels Trace," developer Logan Homes looks to bring a mix of single-family homes, townhomes, apartments, senior apartments and build-to-rent homes to Sunset Beach. The multi-year, multi-phase project will also feature a few acres for commercial uses.
Precautionary swimming advisory issued for Oak Island area due to floodwater pumping
OAK ISLAND, N.C. (WECT) - The N.C. Department of Environmental Quality on Tuesday announced that a precautionary swimming advisory has been issued for Oak Island. Per the NCDEQ, recent rain caused flooding in Oak Island and nearby communities, so to minimize flooding damage, the town is pumping floodwater into the ocean near Crowell Street.

The board emerged from closed session just before 11:00 p.m. to announce the unanimous vote to terminate his contract immediately. Board members Stephanie Kraybill and Josie Barnhart were absent from the meeting. The board named Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources Dr. Christopher Barnes, acting superintendent. The board did not discuss his termination. Foust walked out of the building even before the board took the formal vote.
