Step inside for the latest on several 2025 prospects on Mississippi State’s radar in football and basketball along with team news:

First Biscuit – Starting the day with team news and football, it is kind of hard to believe that Mississippi State opens training camp at some point next week. We are still awaiting the exact day that training camp starts but based on previous schedules, it should start up late next week or the weekend. Per sources, it does appear that the media will be able to talk to assistant coaches during camp but we likely won’t get to talk to them during the season. If you recall, we did not talk to any assistants during spring football and my interviews with defensive coordinator Coleman Hutzler and offensive line coach Cody Kennedy happened before spring practice got underway.

Second Biscuit – Moving to basketball recruiting for a minute, on Tuesday I talked with 2025 guard and On3 three-star prospect Courtland Muldrew of Oak Hill (Va.) Academy. He finished up play at Peach Jam recently with Team Thad and he averaged 15 points and six rebounds in that event. Of late, Muldrew has added offers from Arkansas and Creighton and as he noted previously, he has three official visits set for September and October, which includes Mississippi State on Sept. 14, Ole Miss on Sept. 28 and LSU on Oct. 12. Muldrew added that he may also try to fit in official visits with Arkansas, Creighton and Vanderbilt soon. Since unofficially visiting Mississippi State last month, he said the staff has showed a lot of love and are recruiting him hard. He still does not have a list of favorites yet but he does plan to make his college decision at some point in October.

Third Biscuit – Moving to football recruiting, this week I have checked with sources and recruits to see which 2025 offensive linemen will be attending Mississippi State’s cookout on Thursday, which is the final recruiting event of the summer. As expected, 2025 Mississippi State commitments Mario Nash of Kemper County High School and Josiah Clemons of Clinton Christian Academy are expected to be in town Thursday. Also of note, On3 four-star prospect and former Auburn commitment Carde Smith of Williamson (Ala.) High School is also planning to be back at Mississippi State on Thursday, which would be his third visit to campus this year. Sources also expect several 2026 offensive linemen on State’s radar to be there Thursday and I hope to get all of those names later today.

Fourth Biscuit – Also on Tuesday, I talked some more with 2025 defensive lineman and On3 composite four-star prospect Kevin Oatis of Hattiesburg High School. Oatis said he won’t be able to attend Mississippi State’s cookout on Thursday due to his schedule and said he won’t be visiting any other schools this month. Oatis noted that he still intends to make his college decision in August and said it will likely be in the middle of August when he commits to a school. As it’s been for awhile now, Oatis said his Top 3 favorites include Mississippi State, LSU and Texas A&M with Arkansas also still in the mix. Oatis took official visits to Mississippi State and Arkansas in June and has said before that he may take official visits to LSU and Texas A&M during the season and after he makes his commitment. I still like Mississippi State’s position with Oatis as long as he keeps that same decision timeframe in August.

Fifth Biscuit – Back to basketball and more of a programming note, on Thursday late afternoon the local media will have the chance to talk to Mississippi State’s new transfers after Thursday’s workout. It will be our first opportunity to talk with Riley Kugel, Claudell Harris , Kanye Clary , RJ Melendez, Michael Nwoko and Jeremy Foumena since they arrived in Starkville. All but Foumena started workouts with State in early June while Foumena joined his new teammates on the court earlier this month. I am eager to speak with Kugel because he was the only transfer addition that I didn’t talk to when he made his Mississippi State decision. So look for those stories later this week, weekend and early next week, as well.

And for the gravy on top – And lastly on Tuesday, I talked with 2025 Mississippi State commitment and On3 three-star running back prospect Geron Johnson of Bartlett (Tenn.) High School, who got his initial On3 ranking of 89 last week. Johnson barely missed rushing for 2,000 yards last season (had 1,882 yards) and said his goals this year include getting more yards per carry and helping his team win a championship. Johnson noted that he will be back in Starkville on Thursday for the recruiting cookout and he added that head coach Jeff Lebby and running backs coach Anthony Tucker have done a good job of staying in contact with him since he committed last month. Johnson added that Ole Miss and others are still recruiting him but that he is locked in with his State commitment.
