ST. GEORGE, Staten Island (PIX11) — A bus driver on Staten Island is being hailed a hero after saving a 4-year-old child he found running in the street on Friday morning.

Peter Warner was driving the S61 bus down its usual route near the Staten Island Ferry Terminal on June 19, according to the MTA. Warner said that’s when he saw a barefoot boy wearing nothing but a diaper and a tank top running down the middle of the intersection.

Surveillance video released by the MTA shows Warner using his bus to block the intersection and then bringing the child on board. He contacted the Bus Command Center, the NYPD, and his union.

Warner said that as a father of two small kids himself, he was able to stay calm and think quickly to save the child’s life.

NYPD says the child’s father contacted them about his missing child. It’s unknown how the child got in the street, but he’s since been reunited with his parents.

There were no visible injuries but the child was removed to Staten Island University North Hospital in stable condition to be evaluated and ACS was notified, according to the NYPD.

    Investigations are ongoing.
