Koe Wetzel's wild streak started long before he was the Texas rockstar he is now. Fresh off the release of his new 9 Lives album, Koe sat down with the boys of the God's Country Podcast, and touched on where it all started... at Tarleton State University. https://twitter.com/RandomAthletess/status/1717921167925801266?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1717921167925801266%7Ctwgr%5Eacb3baecdfa081c2d700dba0137d460e139d9d0d%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.whiskeyriff.com%2F2023%2F10%2F28%2Feight-country-artists-who-played-college-football-before-making-the-switch-to-music%2F The rodeo school south of Fort Worth recruited Wetzel to play for their (at the time) D2 team. But it sounds like Koe spent much more time drinking and playing music than he did at practice, leading him to get kicked out. Sitting down with Reid and Dan Isbell, he describes the cowboy school hilariously on the episode:
"It's a cowboy town. It's more of a rodeo school. Pretty much, it's a branch of Texas A&M. Everyone always says the drinking team has a rodeo problem, and that goes with the football team as well...you know. Y'all ever seen 'Blue Mountain State?' It was like 'Blue Mountain State' with a bunch of cowboys and cowgirls running around." The hosts then joke that they bet it got wild with that description. "Oh, dude...that's why I got kicked out of school... In Texas, football is life, so you can get away with failing a couple of classes and still being able to play." Since he was asked to leave the university, Koe might have failed more than a few. But I must admit a cowboy version of Blue Mountain State with Koe as the main star would have made for some PRIMO TV. While he might have been a football failure, Tarleton gave him the avenue to pursue music full-time, which is where he really got to start playing gigs. Given where he is today, it all worked out for him in the end. 9 Lives . While Koe did not explain why the song did not appear on the tracklist during the episode, I hope this means he plans to release it later as a single. They sing a portion of the unreleased track, and Koe's vocals are spot on. Can this clip be the official petition for this track to hit streaming platforms? https://www.instagram.com/p/C9w6j-auBdf/ Turn up that new record while you're at it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r-bMJVhJwo4&pp=ygULa29lIHdldHplbCA%3D
