Competition at Orrville HS to drum up support for the arts
ORRVILLE In an effort to bring the arts to Wayne County, a unique musical and athletic event is coming to Orrville High School’s Heartland Stadium on Sunday, July 28. The second annual DCI Drums in the Heartland Drum & Bugle Corps competition will feature eight Drum and Bugle Corps from across the country and Canada, according to information provided thanks to Megan Hostetler. This event is hosted by the two-time World Championship Drum and Bugle Corps from right here in Northeast Ohio, the Rogues Hollow Regiment, out of Doylestown.
Wadsworth's Blake Frantz to wrestle at Wheeling
Wadsworth incoming junior wrestler Blake Frantz has verbally committed to Division II Wheeling University in West Virginia. The two-time state qualifier earned his first All-Gazette selection last season after placing fourth at 106 pounds at the Division I state tournament in March. He finished among Medina County leaders in wins (37), winning percentage (.771) and takedowns (78) while winning Hoover Holiday and Wadsworth Sectional championships.

Garfield rising junior Conner Hunt had already proven himself at the state level as a tough competitor in the seated track events but now has made his mark at the national level. Hunt won the 100-meter seated dash at the Move United Hartford Nationals in Alabama by setting a national record of 15.71 seconds and finished as the runner-up the 400 and 800-meter seated dashes in the T54-U17 category on July 14.
APS board, superintendent wrestle with district issues
DOWNTOWN AKRON — During the July 22 meeting of the Akron Public Schools (APS) Board of Education, board members tabled a transportation service contract, approved a contract to design the combined Pfeiffer/Miller South school, and accepted the June 2024 financial report. Board members Carla Jackson (board vice president, Buchtel cluster representative and Wards 3 and 4 liaison) and Bruce Alexander (Ellet cluster representative and Ward 6 liaison) were not in attendance.

Massie seniors win high honors at Warren Co. Fair
They were rivals in the ring but friends after the show Friday as a pair of Clinton-Massie seniors-to-be took home top honors in the Warren County Fair’s Showman of Showmen competition. Delaney Chester won Grand Champion honors and Brylie Green won Reserve Grand Champion in the Showman of Showmen. Chester is the 2024 Clinton-Massie FFA president while Green attended the Warren County Career Center in the Veterinary Science program.
