(FOX40.COM) — The Stockton Police Department announced officers will be conducting a DUI and driver’s license checkpoint this week.

The checkpoint will be set up on Friday at an undisclosed location “within city limits” from 5 pm. to 1 a.m., police said.

Police said officers will be looking for signs of impaired driving along with checking for proper licensing.

Locations for checkpoints, like this one, are placed in areas based on collision statistics and where DUI arrests are frequently made.

California law enforcement agencies are legally required to send a prior notice to the public for sobriety checkpoints but they don’t need to release the precise location.

“Research shows that crashes involving an impaired driver can be reduced by up to 20 percent when well-publicized proactive DUI operations are conducted routinely,” Stockton police said in a press release.

Drivers suspected of a DUI can face jail time, fines, and fees and other impacts include DUI classes license suspensions and other expenses that can exceed $10,000.

Funding for the checkpoint is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
