Cooler today, rain through mid-afternoon
WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) - Overnight rainfall has been impressive across southern Kansas with some areas getting too much rain, resulting in flash flooding. Expect cloudy skies today with off on rain and thunderstorms. Severe weather is not expected, however heavy downpours through Noon could produce flooding and flash flooding. Rainfall totals overnight ranged between 0.50″ to almost 5 inches. An additional 1-3″ are possible through the remainder of the day, as tropical moisture associated with these showers and storms moves over the same general regions of Kansas. High temperatures through the afternoon will only manage to reach the 70s and low 80s due to cloud cover, rain, and northerly winds.

Cashless Tolling on Kansas Turnpike starts Monday
HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Cashless tolling on the Kansas Turnpike starts Monday, and Turnpike CEO Steve Hewitt said those with a KTAG already know the drill. "You don't have to get a new KTAG," Hewitt said. "It's going to work the same way. So you're going to go through different zones on the Turnpike versus paying at the booth. We are taking those booths out, number one. That's the main infrastructure thing. Eventually, those booths are coming out. You don't have to stop at the booth to pay. KTAG customers don't have to worry about moving over to the KTAG lane. Just continue to move. We'll ding your KTAG, bill you the normal way. It'll look maybe a little different on your bill when you see it come in, but virtually no change."
INSIGHT: Kansas Legislature dropped ball on affordable housing
A month ago, I editorialized about the recent defeat of a proposed sales tax extension for the Kansas City Chiefs and Royals stadiums in Jackson County, MO. Led by a group called KC Tenants, the “no” vote secured a 58% majority. Their message was, why subsidize venues for billionaire-owned, for-profit sports teams when Kansas Citians cannot find affordable housing? The message resonates on both sides of the state line. However, it did not resonate with the Kansas Legislature. In their recent special session, they passed a scaled-down tax cut bill at the request of the Governor, as well as a package of incentives meant to lure the Chiefs and/or Royals to Kansas. Nothing was done about affordable housing.
After Chiefs and tax cuts, Kansas lawmakers didn't take up other issues in special session
When Kansas lawmakers returned to Topeka for a one-day special session, they kept their focus on tax relief and the Kansas City Chiefs and Royals, opting not to take action on other proposed legislation. Gov. Laura Kelly called the special session after she and the Legislature failed to agree on tax cuts during the regular legislative session and the following veto session. While Kelly's stated reason for the special session was tax cuts, Republican legislative leadership used...

Kansas judge considers injunction on rule criminalizing private sale of guns for profit
A U.S. District Court judge in Wichita will decide whether private gun sales must be processed through a federally licensed firearm dealer if it’s “predominantly to earn a profit.” Gun rights advocates say that puts run-of-the-mill hobbyists at risk of felonies. The dispute comes from 2022 Safer Communities Act, which redefined a gun dealer...
