Suffolk City Council approved an ordinance to accept state grant funds from the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services. During their Wednesday, Feb. 7, council hearing held at City Hall Chambers, council members approved an additional $4,815 to be used for salary increases of the Community Corrections Program staff in the Fiscal Year 2023-2024.
Serving the cities of Suffolk, Franklin, Isle of Wight and Southampton counties, the Community Corrections Program serves as a sentencing alternative to courts in the 5th District for misdemeanant and nonviolent felony offenders. The City of Suffolk also serves as both the program administrator and fiscal agent for the Community Corrections Program. City Manager Albert S. Moor II read the ordinance during the meeting.
“Adoption of this ordinance will increase the revenues and expenditures of the Consolidated Grants Fund Budget by the $4,815. There is no local cash match.”
Also approved was a resolution to endorse two project applications for the Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity (RAISE) Discretionary Grant Program for Fiscal Year 2024-2025 for both the Suffolk Seaboard Coastline Trail, Segment C and Kimberly Bridge Replacement Projects.
Likewise, council also approved an ordinance to authorize the City Manager to authorize a second amendment to the lease for the Whaleyville Communications Tower with Cellco Partnership d/b/a Verizon Wireless (“Cellco”) was approved. Following the city entering into a lease with Cellco on Jan. 1, 2005, for the tower’s space located at 6201 Whaleyville Blvd., the first amendment was executed on Nov. 15, 2017, and provided modifications that Cellco would install on the tower. 2024’s payment will see a reduction of $6,560 with the lease term extending from four optional five-year terms into eight optional five-year terms.
