According to a release, the Lamar County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a man presenting himself as a CPS worker. He reportedly made contact with the guardian of a child, told them he needed to speak with the child and then “gained access to the child.”
The guardians and the child gave a description of the suspect and the suspect’s vehicle to detectives.
The sheriff’s office later learned that the same type of incident had occurred in Sulphur Springs in November 2023 and that the suspect and vehicle description reportedly matched the suspect in Lamar County.
On June 25, the sheriff’s office identified the suspect as Gerald Don Miller, 56 of Franklin County. Detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Miller and a search warrant for Miller’s property where they found evidence linking Miller to both cases.
Miller was charged with three counts of impersonating a public servant, and one count of sexual assault. Miller bonded out from Franklin County Jail on a $25,000 bond and is being held in Hopkins County Jail on a $100,000 bond.
“Law Enforcement and Child Protective Services want to remind communities, that if they are ever involved with CPS, the CPS workers will carry accredited credentials and their workers will show proof of their accredited credentials before talking to you,” the sheriff’s office said.
The sheriff’s office asks anyone who had contact with Miller where he alleged to be with CPS to come forward by contacting their local law enforcement agency. Miller is described as 5 foot 8 inches, approximately 240 lbs, brown and white hair, white mustache and may have been carrying a red case with a Texas Department of Criminal Justice logo on it.
“This investigation is the perfect example of how cooperation between agencies helps solve a case. I would like to commend the efforts of the Lamar County Sheriff’s Office detectives working this case, Child Protective Services, the Sulphur Springs Police Department, Franklin County Sheriff’s Office and the Hopkins County Sheriff’s Office. With this effort, another criminal has been taken off our streets and out of our neighborhoods,” Lamar County Sheriff Scott Cass said.
