SUMTER COUNTY, Fla. – A 70-year-old Lakeland man was killed in a Sumter County crash that happened Sunday at around 9:05 am.

Troopers say a westbound Ford Expedition driven by a 69-year-old Winter Garden man ran a red light and struck a northbound milk tanker truck on its passenger side.

The impact caused both vehicles to veer northwest into the southbound lanes of SR-471.

There, the milk truck collided with a Harley Davidson motorcycle driven by a 70-year-old Lakeland man who was waiting in a left-turn lane. He died at the scene, troopers say.

The milk truck driver, a 58-year-old North Port man, sustained minor injuries. The Ford Expedition driver sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to a nearby hospital.

Fortunately, the milk tanker did not overturn, and its cargo remained contained. However, a significant amount of fuel from the truck spilled onto the roadway.

SR-471 southbound lanes are closed for cleanup of the fuel spill and crash debris. Motorists are advised to seek alternate routes.
