Johnson Lawn Bowls Club hosts 'battle of the birds' in Sun City West

The Firebirds versus the Snowbirds battle has come and gone, with 54 participants playing in the March 24 lawn bowling battle.

There were two games completed. The first was a regular eight end game and the second was a modified version of Australian pairs. The lead bowled ends 1, 3 and 5 as leads. Then, the leads switched to become skips for ends 2, 4 and 6.

After bowling, there was a meal of fried chicken, salads and desserts.

The Snowbirds showed well in numbers of attendees with a few more than the Firebirds. The Snowbirds were given 30 extra points added to their overall score because of their attendance. However, the Firebirds prevailed with a final score of 258 points to 233 points for the Snowbirds.

Twelve “goodie bags” were given out — six for the Snowbirds and six for the Firebirds. Six $5 gift cards were also given away — three and three — to the Dollar Tree. The final prize of the day was a 12-pound turkey (in keeping with the bird theme), donated by Tracy Anderson and given to winner Bill Prudencio.
