Watch: The Best Surf Edits Of The Week
By Zander Morton,
It's hard to keep up with the constant drip of surf content. Pro surfers are media machines. Blink and you'll miss another new edit.
Rather than continually refresh your YouTube homepage, we'll curate a list of the best surf action, and then drop it all in one post at the end of the week. Scroll below for your comprehensive list of the best edits from the last seven days.
1) Kipp Caddy’s Journey to the Wave of a Lifetime
Kipp Caddy isn't a household name, but he probably should be. "'Desensitized' is my debut surf film," says Caddy in the description of this very good 20-minute film. "This documentary-style film follows my evolution from a fearless 13-year-old to a seasoned big-wave surfer. Centered around three iconic Australian breaks that have defined my career, it showcases my path into the world of big-wave surfing. This film is a tribute to 10 years of trials, triumphs, and relentless dedication. Experience the highs and lows of my surf journey as I chase the ultimate ride and push myself to see what's possible in the realm of big-wave surfing."
2) J-Bay vs Skeleton Bay: Surfing the Same XL Swell at Africa’s Two Best Waves
In early July, an XL swell slammed the coast of Namibia and South Africa on the same day. Thanks to Alan Van Gysen and Now Now media, we know exactly how both waves looked simultaneously. "Join us on a 24-hour journey as the XL swell of the year (so far) lights up two of Africa’s most iconic waves on the same day. Some of the world’s best surfers and underground tube hunters give it a crack as we document both locations and compare notes. The only question is, would you rather go left, or right?"
3) Barron Mamiya Attacks Tahiti
Barron Mamiya surfs with all gas, no brakes. In "File 8", Mamiya teams up with Teahupo'o local Matahi Drollet and the pair rush flexing Chopes during a recent swell. While neither of these guys are in the Olympics, both deserve to be. This edit proves as much.
4) According to Cinematographer Tim Bonython, "This Wave Is Evil"
Like Nate Florence , Tim Bonython lives on the Slab Tour. Difference being, Bonython is the guy behind the scenes, capturing the action at the world's scariest setups. "This wave is EVIL," writes Bonython. "You don't want to surf this wave even if you're good at it. It's the epitome of what is known as the classic Aussie slab. A small piece of reef poking out where deep water swells hit hard that create a serious tubing barrel. We call this spot the LEFT as its on the other side of a large Western Australian bay from the RIGHT. These two waves are in my favourite top Aussie 3 waves that I love to film. (Shipsterns in Tasmania is the 3rd slab). So for something different enjoy this 25 minutes of craziness."
5) Noah Hill, Mick Davey and Hunter Jones Score in Salina Cruz
No matter how many times you see it (or surf it) Salina Cruz will never get old. In the edit above, Noah Hill, Mick Davey and Hunter Jones head south to Salina and bounce between perfect sand points. With fairly consistent swell aimed at Mex for most of the summer months, and with more than a dozen sand bottom rights within a couple of hours drive, is there anywhere in the world you're more likely to score between May and September?
