Maui Wildfires: One Year Later, Here’s How You Can Help

One year ago, Maui changed forever. Yesterday, August 8, marked one year since wildfires tore through Lahaina, razing thousands of structures and displacing thousands more. Official reports were that 102 people were killed.

An exhausting relief effort ensued, and “Lahaina Strong” was born. Government officials lauded the greater Maui community’s response , which brought in food, water, gas and other supplies. With roads closed in the immediate aftermath, some even used jetskis to shuttle supplies to those in need. The response was so clear and meaningful that it drew eyeballs from around the world. In July, ESPN gave the entire Maui’s surfing community the Muhammad Ali Sports Humanitarian award at its annual ESPY show. GoFundMe has compiled this list of verified fundraisers who need a helping hand. There are campaigns to support local businesses, memorials, families and community relief. The tragedy is still very much on the minds of Maui’s community. Maui Nui Strong also has a relief page to give housing, funds and food.

On Thursday, hundreds of people attended a paddleout in West Maui yesterday for the one-year anniversary, paying tribute to the lives lost.

Maui surf legend Dusty Payne summarized his emotions at the end of his heartfelt post. ”My heart, love, and prayers go out to everyone from our community on this day,” he said. “I will always love you Lahaina.”
