5 Years In Waiting, The Right Rears Its Ugly Head For West Oz Slab Hunters

Shipstern Bluff in Tasmania, Ours in Sydney, even Teahupo'o in Tahiti. All harrowing slabs that defy surfers to charge it. But among this all-star list of mutants, The Right in West Oz holds a reputation for being both heavy and photogenic ... a dangerous combination for the adrenaline-fueled surfer looking to make a name for himself.

And for big-wave documentarian Tim Bonython, there's nothing quite like it. A rare bird that doesn't spread its wings all that open, when the conditions all recently came together, there was nowhere else Tim would rather be.

"Out of all the big wave spots on the planet The Right takes the cake as one of the most incredible spots to film," he explains. "I have waited five years to get this place on. It's the SLAB of Slabs. As Kipp Caddy says, 'It's the Mount Everest of slab surfing.'"

So what makes The Right so perilous? Watch Tim's account of the session and it's pretty obvious. Nothing about the spot looks inviting. Nothing.

"This wave is super dangerous as it comes with the worst hold downs you can get. You don't want to fall here," continues Tim. "The Right in Western Australia is a wonder of the ocean world."

We have to agree. And as you'll see, the session was worth the wait. It's no-holds-barred, risk-your-like surfing, and I could watch it for days...just don't ask me to paddle out.
