Surry County will be hosting a continuing education class for area general contractors later this month next in Dobson that will satisfy annual requirements for contractors.

“I want to invite general contractors through the area to come to our general contractor’s continuing education class in Dobson,” said Keith Kiger, the lead building inspector for Surry County.

He said what general contractors already know, North Carolina requires them to have eight hours of continuing education each year. However, what they may not know is the county is trying to help make the process to obtain those hours easier.

“The North Carolina Building Inspectors’ Association will be teaching the class, that will cover building codes and two hours of mandatory North Carolina requirements,” he said.

The continuing education session is planned for June 24 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Surry County Service Center located at 915 E. Atkins St. in Dobson.

Kiger said he became the Area 2 director for the association four years ago and after taking that role, “I brought this class to Surry County when I became director.”

Over the past few years, he said that Surry County Inspections has been sponsoring and this year the Surry County Home Builder’s Association is co-sponsoring with them.

Kiger said the class is available to any general contractors who need the continuing education and it is not solely for Surry County residents. “We have had over 70 contractors from Wilkes, Surry, Stokes, Yadkin, and Forsyth counties and well as from other areas come,” he explained

Entry to the event will cost $150 per person which Kiger noted includes lunch and license renewal fee; he added that a local business will provide breakfast. Payment will be taken at the door and a check may be made out the association.

Those interested in attended the continuing education sessions are asked to make their RSVP before June 17 by email to: centralpermitting@co.surry.nc.us and are asked to include names, email addresses, and phone numbers for all attendees so that a proper headcount can be made and the correct amount of food procured.

To find out more contact Kiger at 336-401-8300 or kigerk@co.surry.nc.us.
