SACRAMENTO — The Fourth of July may be over, but work is just beginning at the UC Davis burn center in Sacramento, where treatment is underway for all the victims injured by fireworks.Dr. Tina Palmieri is the chief burn surgeon at the Firefighters Burn Institute Regional Burn Center at UC Davis. She said about two dozen people suffered firework-related wounds."Unfortunately, two people had to go to surgery immediately for amputations," she said. "This year is interesting. Friday marked day six of Northern California's heatwave. The heat has intensified each day. According to the National Weather Service, downtown Sacramento's high temperature reached 110 degrees on Friday afternoon. That is a new daily record high for July 5. The previous record of 108 degrees was set in 2007.
2 critically injured in Northern California mine shaft explosion
PLACER COUNTY — Two people suffered critical injuries in an explosion inside a Northern California mine shaft, officials said Friday.The Foresthill Fire Protection District said it happened shortly after 9:40 a.m. at a mine shaft along Mosquito Ridge Road at Gorman Ranch Road in Placer County.Personnel with the Foresthill district and the U.S. Forest Service located the two people outside of the mine shaft. They were then airlifted to Sutter Roseville Trauma Center.The Foresthill fire district said the Bureau of Mine Safety was taking the lead on the investigation. The mine will remain closed until an inspection can be done.

Community Foundation Update (07/06/2024)
The Arkansas Community Foundation (ARCF) has announced the creation of the Fordyce Survivors Fund in response to the mass shooting on June 21 in Fordyce, Arkansas. 100 percent of donations to the fund will provide financial support for survivors of the shooting. ARCF will partner with Victim’s First, a volunteer-led nonprofit helping with immediate needs, along with the Mass Violence Survivor’s Fund—national entities with experience serving communities following more than 50 mass shootings nationwide.

Earlier this year, two trends gaining momentum neared a collision in California’s restaurants and bars. One was a statewide ban on junk fees — here defined as anything over and above the items purchased on a particular visit to a shop, hotel or other establishment. The other? The fact that a growing number of restaurants are charging fees in order to pay their staff a living wage or provide them with healthcare. The metaphorical collision in this situation is that California’s government seemed ready to treat restaurant fees as junk fees — which is to say, not allowing bars and restaurants to charge them.
