In spite of several large donations this summer, Mesa's Hydration Donation Campaign is unable to keep up with the need for bottles of water in the community. The campaign, which started on June 5, the has received 166,367 bottles of water. While this is a large number of water bottles, it falls short of the total received last year by nearly 46,000 bottles.

Donated bottles of water help people in need during this record-breaking summer. The unsheltered population is particularly at risk. Water donations can be the difference between life and death for those who are exposed to the heat of an Arizona summer.

The goal this year is to collect a total of 700,000 bottles of water. Cash donations are also accepted.

Residents of Mesa can donate at one of twenty drop-off locations throughout the City The list of locations is available on the City of Mesa website.

    Large donations

The MesaNow website reports that the following organizations and individuals made large donations of bottled water:

    • Niagara -- 40,000 bottles
    • Eastmark -- almost 20,000 bottles
    • Benchmark -- approximately 13,000 bottles
    • Dobson Ranch resident Zari Pavri -- approximately 13,000 bottles (matched by a cash donation from the Dobson Ranch HOA)
    • Via Church -- 7,603 bottles
    • Back on Track Chiropractic -- 5,124 bottles
    • Mesa Rotary -- more than two tons of water

    One Ton Water Challenge

The Mesa Chamber of Commerce, United Food Bank, and the City of Mesa challenges businesses, residents, and organizations to buy a pallet of water, which weighs more than one ton. The pallet can be purchased for about $200. Individuals can split the cost to make it more affordable. If you would like to donate a pallet, contact Mandy Hodges at mhodges@unitedfoodbank.org.

The Mesa Hydration Donation Campaign ends on Friday, September 29.
