Two Toledo-area educators will be joining Great Lakes scientists for a week aboard the Research Vessel Lake Guardian as it plies Lake Erie in search of more clues about the world’s 11th largest freshwater lake. Amanda Miller, Imagination Station experience manager, and Ethan Jessing, a science teacher at Hull Prairie Intermediate School in Perrysburg, will board the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency vessel at the Port of Cleveland on Sunday. They are among 15 educators who will be part of the vessel’s crew until next Saturday. “I'm hoping to learn and absorb everything I can,” Ms. Miller said. Mr. Jessing said the opportunity will give him the chance “to do more meaningful teacher development.”
TPD: Car goes off road near Douglas and Laskey before hitting pole, flipping over
TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) - A single vehicle crash ended with a car flipping over in Toledo Friday afternoon. The crash occurred on July 5 around 12:54 p.m. According to Toledo Police, the 34-year-old woman from Sylvania, was driving southbound on Douglas Road headed toward Laskey Road when she lost control, over corrected and went of the road. Her vehicle then hit a curb and a light pole before before flipping over.

Of the 14 defensive linemen listed on the roster, 11 are back from last season, and of the 15 sacks registered by that unit a year ago, 13 are by returning players.

Smoke alarms save lives: Fire departments want to equip public with detectors
TOLEDO, Ohio — Fire departments across the area want you to know that having working smoke alarms could save your life if your home catches on fire. According to a National Fire Protection Association report, almost three out of five deaths happen in home without a fire alarm or with one that does not work. According to the report, power source issues are the most common reason smoke alarms do not operate.
4 shot in separate incidents over holiday
Four people were shot in Toledo over the holiday, according to Toledo police. Around 7:15 p.m. Wednesday, a 34-year-old man showed up at Mercy Health St. Vincent Medical Center with a gunshot wound. He said he was shot near Greenbelt Parkway and Bush Street but gave police an inconsistent story as to what happened. A Toledo teen was shot in the neck Thursday afternoon, police said. Around 1 p.m. police, responding to a ShotSpotter alert reporting 14 gunshots, found evidence of a shooting in the 400 block of West Delaware Avenue. While on scene, Xavier Russell, 17, walked into St. Vincent seeking treatment for a gunshot wound. Police said the gunshot wound was the result of a disorder the Russel youth was involved in on West Delaware. Around 11 p.m. Thursday, police responded to Birmingham Terrace in East Toledo on a report of two people shot. They found two victims, each with gunshot wounds that didn’t appear to be life-threatening. Due to lack of cooperation from the victims and no ShotSpotter alerts from the devices near the complex, police are unsure of where the pair were shot. Both individuals were transported to St. Vincent.
Teen shot in central Toledo Thursday
TOLEDO, Ohio — A teenager was injured Thursday afternoon after a shooting in central Toledo that also struck multiple homes and a vehicle. According to a Toledo police report, officers received a ShotSpotter alert indicating 14 shots had been fired in the 400 block of West Delaware Avenue around 1 p.m. Crews responded to the area, where they located a scene and evidence; at the same time, they were informed by dispatch that a local hospital had received a walk-in gunshot wound victim.
