SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) - The Aberdeen Art Council has a very active spring and summer planned. First on their agenda is public voting on artworks currently being displayed on windows of downtown businesses. Art judges picked the top 10 works from submissions from the greater Aberdeen area....

Aberdeen’s first pharmacist was a pioneer named John Firey, who came to Aberdeen in 1882. A year later, he married Susan Mack of Illinois. In that same year, just two years after Aberdeen got started, he built this house near the corner of 5th Avenue S.E. and Arch Street. It has all the elements of a typical Queen Anne home except a turret. You can make out a variety of shingle shakes on the gable end surrounding a round attic window, directly below some fret work. The chimney is ornate, and the porches are lined with spindles and columns faintly visible behind the trees. The elevated wood sidewalk is probably quite new as the Hagerty Lloyd development, where this house resides, was platted in 1882. I don’t know exactly when this photo was taken, but I would presume it was a couple years after 1883 as the trees are a bit full, yet still very small. Knight Foundation, is installing artworks on ten business windows in downtown Aberdeen in mid-May. The artworks were submitted in response to a Call for Art with a theme of “South Dakota Landscapes.” A judging panel selected the artworks to be displayed. It is the fourth year in a row for the Downtown Art Project.

Elaine Schaible is the area Humane Society manager who says the Sunday-only arrangement went so well that volunteer dog walking has been expanded to Friday and Saturday.

U.S. Representative Dusty Johnson (R-S.D.) announced Eva Madsen from Aberdeen as the winner of the 2024 Congressional Art Competition for South Dakota. Madsen’s drawing “Freckle Face” is a self-portrait highlighting her unique facial features surrounded by blooming roses. Madsen is finishing her senior year at Roncalli High School. Her art teacher is Amy Heinz. The artwork will be on exhibit for the next year in the Cannon Tunnel at the U.S. Capitol, along with the winning artwork from other congressional districts.

Nice;02 is the second iteration of our annual juried exhibition at Midwest Nice Art! We are so excited to be able to bring this opportunity to our community again. This exhibition will be juried by Midwest Nice Art co-founders Tim Rickett + Epiphany Knedler. The exhibition will be displayed at JFAC Gallery on the Northern State University campus in Aberdeen, South Dakota Summer 2024. This exhibition is open to all artists 18+ in the United States. Artists may submit two works for consideration. The entry fee is $20. Students can submit for $10 with a student code (NICESTUDENT2024). This exhibition is open theme – show us your best work!
