As I See It
The big news in the November 1966 Western World was the new Rural Fire truck (first picture) arriving in Bandon. "Culmination of much hard work on the part of the Bandon Junior Chamber of Commerce and members of the Rural Fire Protection District was realized last week with the arrival of the RFPD's new fire truck which will serve the outlying homes in the district as well as City of Bandon customers. ...

The Chamber Minute: From the Desk of Rosey Thomas
In for another Chamber Minute, it’s Rosey. May is well under way and it is warming up outside. Speaking of warming up the competition is heating up in and around Coos County for the Annual Dancing with the Stars Fundraiser June 1st at the Egyptian Theatre, where I will take on the likes of Nichole Rutherford from the City of Coos Bay where her short but mighty stature threatens to bring the moves that would shake the whole city! Stephan Pearson of Pearson properties is saying his swagger will leave everyone speechless! Andrew Brainard always the sporty dude, will be...

Phone and Internet Restored after 3 Weeks without Service
The community on Weekly Creek Road, just outside of Myrtle Point, was without internet or phone service for three weeks. Service provider Ziply was very unresponsive to inquiries from residents, and representatives from the county gave similar treatment, as each organization pointed fingers at each other. The residents of Weekly Creek, a community of mostly seniors, rely heavily on the services provided by Ziply Fiber. Not knowing where else to go, resident Carol McCarthy sent in a news tip to the World to make us...
Letter: I’m supporting the Coos County Public Safety Levy, Main
I encourage your support of the Coos County Public Safety Levy 6-213 and the re-election of Commissioner Robert Main. Sadly, a huge burden of public safety has been shifted to local taxpayers due to State Laws decriminalizing so much negative conduct, mandating instant release from custody, and the closing of prisons. Remember Shutters Creek which did so much for our community and for the inmates themselves. In August of 2022, Coos County Community Corrections supervised 463 people and had an additional 300 clients with warrants...
Letter: Drew Farmer will help move Coos County forward
I’m a committed voter living in Coos County for nearly 50 years. I want to be well-informed about the candidates and issues before I vote. I watched the recorded League of Women Voters’ Candidate Forum, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W9pBpPjwWN8 to hear what the candidates for Coos County Commissioner had to say. Drew Farmer stood out as knowledgeable, intelligent, and caring; Chris Castleman stumbled ignorantly through most questions; and 15-year incumbent, Bob Main, had declined to participate. I read Bob Main’s statement in the Voters’ Pamphlet for our Oregon...
As I See It
A big headline on the front page of the Oct. 6, 1927, Western World reads: "Sewer Cost Prohibitive." "At the city council meeting last evening the matter of building a sewer to take care of the city park (first photo) was under discussion. Engineer Hadsell submitted a profile and estimate of cost of a system, comprising of an eight-inch concrete pile line along Lincoln avenue to the bluff, at an estimated cost of $1,000. ...
The Chamber Minute: From the Desk of Rosey Thomas
In for another Chamber minute, it's Rosey. May has arrived, and that means most of us will be getting our ballots this week, Some important things are on the ballot this year, The Chamber is supporting the Public Safety Levy and hopes the community will too. We NEED a SAFE place to call our own and we NEED a solid Public Safety system, now more than ever. Crime is on the rise and we know we cannot leave things as they currently are. If Coos County doesn’t pass the jail levy then the consequences will cause budget cuts all across...
