Two-week Poe Rd. closure in Bowling Green starts June 10
BOWLING GREEN — Poe Road between Brim Road and Village Drive will be closed beginning June 10. City crews will be connecting the new waterline, which was installed as part of the Village subdivision waterline improvements project, to the existing water main. This closure is expected for two weeks and is dependent on weather and progress of work. Access to and from driveways for residents will be maintained. Village residents and those who live along Poe within the closure should have their refuse/recycling containers placed at the curb by 6 a.m. the morning of collection.
Road Warrior: Work starts on I-75's Road 99 interchange with ramp detour first up
FINDLAY — Work starts this week on the Ohio Department of Transportation’s reconstruction of I-75’s Hancock County Road 99 interchange into a diverging diamond layout, with a short-term ramp detour starting Wednesday. The Road 99 entrance to southbound I-75 will be closed for three days. Traffic will be directed onto northbound I-75 all the way to State Rt. 18 near North Baltimore and then back on southbound I-75. Next week, Main Street will be closed on the north side of Road 99 for project-related work. A detour will use County Roads 99, 18, and 215. June 3 will also mark the start of pier construction for the first of two new bridges at the interchange. The left lane on I-75 will close in both directions. Once the first bridge opens, the existing bridge will be torn down and replaced.
ODOT plans new roundabouts in intersection safety package
Three new roundabouts in Wood County plus others in Henry, Fulton, and Defiance counties are part of an $86.9 million package of safety-oriented projects the Ohio Department of Transportation announced statewide. The projects that Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine and ODOT Director Jack Marchbanks announced Thursday also include “intersection improvements” at Alexis Road and North Detroit Avenue in North Toledo. All but a handful of the 28 projects in 22 counties are at intersections, and 19 projects involve building single-lane roundabouts at mostly rural locations where ODOT said crashes are frequent, although the announcement did not include crash data. “When it comes to our roadways, safety will always be our top priority,” Gov. DeWine said. “Our goal is to save lives by investing to improve dangerous intersections.”
Ohio DNR has new wetland project going near Sandusky Bay
SANDUSKY — Another H2Ohio wetland is being built to improve water quality in western Lake Erie’s Sandusky Bay, this time near the Pickerel Creek Wildlife Area roughly halfway between Fremont and Sandusky. The project complements others done previously in the Sandusky area near the Cedar Point amusement park. Some of that work was shown in the fall of 2022 to 35 people, including U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D., Ohio) and some Bowling Green State University researchers. Scudder Mackey, Ohio Division of Coastal Management director, said the multiple coastal wetland projects in various stages of development in the vicinity of Sandusky Bay are a first for the Great Lakes region. The bay has been a long-overlooked part of Lake Erie that has harbored a different type of toxin-producing algae, planktothrix, from the toxin-producing microcystis that’s in the majority of the lake’s western basin.
Downtown Fremont has seen a rebirth. But do you remember scenes from the past 50 years?
It’s good to see that there is lots of activity in the Fremont downtown area these days. Cars parked along the street and people walking, hopefully to do some serious shopping or enjoy a meal or entertainment, are good signs. And activities are planned to bring visitors down during the year.
