According Sheila Twine, a work-based learning coordinator at PCHS, this was the first year that students at the school could sign up for an EMT class with Perquimans Emergency Medical Services. ...

Camden Early College High School graduation was as much a milestone for the 28 graduates who walked the stage to receive their diploma on Thursday as it was for the ceremony’s commencement speaker, Dr. Derrike Black. Black began his career as a Camden educator in 2015 at Camden Intermediate School when members of the early college’s Class of 2024 were in the fourth-grade. “Take time to rest and surround yourself...

College of The Albemarle’s state allocation for the 2024-25 fiscal year is projected to be nearly 7% more than this year, thanks to a projected 300-student jump in enrollment. CAMDEN — What happened to the Camden High School softball team in the 2A NCHSAA softball state playoffs Friday night was unbelievable, shocking, and just plain wrong. While there...
Mitchell column: B&G 3rd-graders take first place in academic contest
In December, the North Carolina Alliance of Boys & Girl Clubs contacted sites across the state with a very attractive proposal. They were seeking groups that were interested in participating in a pilot partnership with Edentum, a company that provides online academic programming. The pilot begins with diagnostic testing and then gives each student a computer based “Exact Path” of targeted lessons and testing to increase their proficiency in math and reading. This pilot has a $4,500 value and we jumped at the opportunity to...
Dwayne L. Barnes: DEI vital to educational institutions
As a staunch advocate for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) in education, I cannot overstate the crucial role these initiatives play in shaping the futures of all students. DEI is more than a set of policies — it’s a commitment to creating a learning environment that respects and values every student’s unique background and perspective. In sharing my insights, I aim to underline the significance of DEI initiatives and discuss the potentially detrimental impact of their absence. Diversity in our schools does much more than...
